The academic world and Jewish community are mourning the loss of a respected leader, educator, and advocate, Bernie Steinberg. The former Director of Harvard Hillel passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

Steinberg, who served as the director of Harvard Hillel from 1993 to 2010, was a faculty member at the Pardes Institute of Jerusalem and a founding fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. He was known for his passionate commitment to education and Jewish communal work.

His scholarly pursuits included a notable dissertation at the Hebrew University on Hermann Cohen and Nahman Krochmal. Despite his academic achievements, Steinberg chose to dedicate his life to Jewish communal work and education.

His final public moment was a courageous op-ed he wrote in the Crimson titled, “For the Safety of Jews and Palestinians, Stop Weaponizing Antisemitism at Harvard”.
