Along with their sister species, the Neanderthals, the Denisovans are an extinct subgroup of fossil humans who also had a common progenitor with Homo sapiens. Only Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains of Siberia, where they initially appear to have entered the stage from probably as early as 287,000 years ago, has provided information about them up to this point (or, conservatively, from around 200,000 years ago)

The Denisovans lived in the Altai region for at least a period of well over 100,000 years, at least at various times, according to the latest known presence, which was quite a bit later, roughly 55,000 years ago.

The cave’s sediments have so far produced fossils from four different known Denisovan people, as well as an intriguing fragment of a long bone from a girl who had a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father. In fact, other fully Neanderthal remains have also been found in Denisova Cave, and the evidence implies that two populations coexisted, interbred, and occasionally interacted with one another for a period of about 150,000 years.
