Doris Wellington Obituary, Death – Burks, Doris Wellington On November 5, 2023, Stanley, a lifelong resident of Bedford who loved everyone she encountered, departed quietly at the Bedford County Nursing Home. Nobody could ever count all the treasures she left behind, but selflessness, gentleness, kindness, thankfulness, and the delight of a huge smile were among them. Her husband, James A. “Buck” Stanley; parents.

Frank Wellington Burks and Sally Ethel Wheat Burks; and five siblings, Mary, Hallie, Frances, Reed, and Bill, all passed away before her May 12, 1924, birthplace in Sedalia. Her son Jim Stanley and his wife Teresa, daughter Julie Stanley, grandsons Beckham Stanley and his fiancé Caroline Bones, and Davis Stanley and his wife Emily, step-grandchildren Naomi, Iris, and Toby, and a cherished sister-in-law Jeannine Burks are among her surviving family members.

Doris left her family with a deep affection for Westview Avenue, Bedford County, politics, genealogy, hard work, baked apples, oatmeal cookies, okra pie, volunteering, and the people who lived there—many of whom she was related to. Above all, she remained true to herself despite the unfathomable changes occurring all around her. She accepted those difficulties and had faith in humanity’s eventual endeavor to improve everyone’s quality of life.

The Bedford County Nursing Home staff has provided the family with compassionate care for almost six years, and for that, the family is very appreciative. Please think about making a donation to the Sedalia Center or Main Street UMC in place of flowers, or just strike up a conversation with a stranger and create a new acquaintance. Rev. Dawn Compton will preside over a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, beginning at 2:00 PM. Visitation is not permitted. Bedford’s Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service is in charge of making the arrangements.
