Gary Moeller, the University of Michigan’s hand-picked replacement for Bo Schembechler and former Detroit Lions head coach, has died.
Moeller died this morning, according to the Michigan football program, which announced the news on Monday. He was 81.
Moeller was best known for his two-decade tenure at Michigan, where he worked his way up through the ranks under Schembechler, from position coach to coordinator to head coach, a position he held from 1990 to 1994.

Prior to his death Gary Moeller was known to be a responsible and loving husband and a father of four.
He married his longtime girlfriend Ann several decades ago and has lived happily after until today’s heartbreaking news. Their romantic union was blessed with four kids who are adults now; three girls and a son.
Moeller’s three daughters happen to be Susan, Amy, and Molly, and his son, Andy, a former Wolverine linebacker and captain.
The family will hold a visitation at Chiles-Laman Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio, on Friday, July 15, from 2-8 p.m. (1170 Shawnee Road).
On Saturday, July 16, a private family funeral will be held.
