Girl Scouts Are Going Digital with Online Cookie Sales

Publish date: 2024-05-26

Get ready to snap up this year's Samoas with the click of a mouse! This January, the Girl Scouts of America are bringing their annual cookie sales online. One thing is for sure: This is going to be sweet.

The Girl Scouts, founded more than a century ago in 1912, have staunchly avoided allowing troops to hawk their iconic cookies online and have long encouraged face-to-face sales. That all changes soon when the digital gates open for scouts to create their own websites to take orders and ship the cookies straight to your door.

The new digital platform is excepted to greatly increase cookie sales, which already pull in an estimated $800 million annually. But you’ll still need to know a scout to snap up a box of Thin Mints. With the “Digital Cookie” platform, each scout can set up her own website and then send emailed invitations to allow clients to gain access. Scouts will also be given the option to reach their customers with a mobile app. Available now in iTunes, the Girl Scout Cookie Finder, matches your current GPS location with nearby cookie sales.

The new digital sales options are expected to make to make things easier on both scouts and clients by allowing credit card processing, direct shipping, and making it simpler to keep track of sales, but the Girl Scout Council of America still encourages scouts to supplement their online efforts with traditional face-to-face selling for a well-rounded education in entrepreneurial skills.
